King’s Table : Hnefatafl [Nhev-eh-TAH-full]King's Table (click picture for larger view)

Hnefatafl was played throughout Scandinavia, Iceland, Germany, England, Wales and Ireland.  It dates back to before 400 AD. Play declined in the 11th century with the rise of Chess.  Researching the game you will discover it’s known by several names and many rule variations can be found.  Hnefatafl is referenced in Old Norse literature.  Hnefatafl translates from old Norse to the English "Kings Table".  In modern Iceland there are still tournaments for Hnefatafl. It is possible that Hnefatafl developed from Ludus Latrunculorum, (“the game of brigands”), which was adopted by Celts from Romans.
